wellpoint_150x150I have been super busy lately and have finally found some time to update my portfolio. Here is a website that I that I recently worked on for ColletoBlu.com. I was given a PSD and told to create a working website that utilizes WordPress as a CMS. This particular site purposed a challenge for me in regards to the sidebar navigation on the left side. They asked for the posts to show up on the left side with a specific image for each post. I was able to create a way to utilize the Custom Fields functionality to come up with the desired sidebar navigation (I’m currently writing a tutorial on how I did it, so check back soon).

I’ve been super busy lately working on various freelance projects. If it keeps up at the current pace I’ll be quitting my serving job and working full-time as a freelance web designer. Woot! I’m currently working on a few tutorials for this site involving WordPress. I’ve been developing some sites recently using WordPress as a CMS and have developed a few things that other people can benefit from. The tutorials will be aimed at people that are just starting to use WordPress as a CMS.

I also have more websites to add to my portfolio! I’ve recently finished a few projects that I’ve been dying to add but just haven’t had time. I plan on adding them tonight.

UC_125x125So after creating my new theme I’ve realized this site needs A LOT of tweaking. This site is my first attempt at using WordPress as a CMS. While developing the new Ribbon theme I experimented, tested, and learned a lot of new things. Over the next few days I’m going to be fixing some issues with my current website and it’s going to get a small face-lift. I plan on adding drop down menu’s, fixing some font issues, adding a 404 page, search page, custom fields, and am thinking about adding a featured section for recent projects.

ribbon_thumbI’ve been teaching myself the in’s and out’s of WordPress by building my own theme from scratch. This theme is the fruit of that labor and now it’s available for download. While teaching myself I’ve used a variety of resources. My main resource has been How to be a Rockstar WordPress Designer by Collis Ta’eed and Harley Alexander.

wordpressI found a useful link from DesignBump with a list of cheat-sheets for WordPress. Some of the cheat-sheets are new to me but others I use and have been an asset for creating my personal blog theme. I’m new to WordPress but it’s not so hard to grasp and with these resources it’s even easier.  One resource that should be included in the list is “Huge Compilation of WordPress Code” from WP Hacks. Very useful with a wealth of information.
